Getting Passport Appointment at Visakhapatnam

I have applied for tatkal passport from Visakhapatnam. My experiences are as follows.

Step 1: Go to SP office and meet the CI at foreigner's registration services at SP office (Visakhapatnam) with proof of urgency, request letter and with all original documents and photocopies.

Step 2: Once he approves, he will ask to go and meet at the foreigner's registration services a person by name krishna.

Step 3: He will re-verify for the address and takes5 photographs and say the police verification will be done with in 2 to 3 days.

Step 4: Go the treasury office next to MRO office at I town, fill in the challan for the police account , make an entry in the treasury register and get it stamped. Go the Sbi branch and pay Rs 1000 and take xerox copies as well as original and submit to the guy in SP office.

Step5: Verification officer will come to your home address as mentioned in the request letter for tatkal passport. He will verify the contents at home and ask us to get it signed from the neighbours and he takes our signature as well and submits the report to the CI.

Step 6: Once the police verification completes, go to the SP office on the next day and meet the guy at FRS at SP office.

Step 7: He will ask us to meet at 7pm after the signatures are done with SP. Condition is that the SP should be available at the time you applied for.

Step 8: He will call you after the letters are back with signatures. Make a signature on the letters and collect the police verification letter. Nobody will ask for any money at SP office.
Getting Passport Appointment at Visakhapatnam

Step 9: Have all the required proofs like, address proof, identity proof, residence certificate from MRO even you have ration card as address proof (this is must, otherwise the passport office guys will reject the application), affidavit as mentioned in annexure i, 3 photographs, 3 sets of photocopies of all the originals . In passport website, it is mentioned as 2 sets, don't trust this. Birth certificate (if any), Highest qualification (if any), Marriage certificate(if any) and get attested (must) on all the photo copies by any gazetted officer.

Step 10: Go to Visakhapatnam passport office immediately on any working day(mon-fri). Make sure to be in the line first(there is no token system currently) everyone is allowed on first come first serve basis. The gates will be opened at around 9 am to 9:30 (any time). We are there in line from morning 4 am and we were the first person let in. The applications will be accepted till 12 noon sharp only and the others are asked to leave the premises immediately. Plan accordingly.

Step 11. Set all the photocopies in order after the each photograph in the application and make it tied up by the thread provided by the security guard, otherwise the applications will not be accepted.

Step 12. The guy in counter no 2 will take for tatkal passport applications. He is a rejection expert. If he found that the proofs are improper he will reject and ask us meet on next day. Be careful.( if you are a sr citizen or for the kids he will help us very much in accepting the applications immediately) no waiting. Very good in this regard.

Step 13: He will ask us to pay the fee (1000(application fees + 1500 (tatkal fees). For kids, the fees is 600 + 1500 only.

Step 14: He will ask us to meet the passport officer , here all your patience will be tested. And he will take the police verification letter and ask us some details. Then he will write the date of dispatch on the receipt and the application. The passports will not be given by hand at any cost.

PSK Kanpur Experience

Passport Office has now started PSK which gives you a changed experience in applying for a fresh or reissue passport. It is opening in different cities of India. I live in Lucknow, Kanpur. I went to PSK Kanpur to update my passport.

First of all I need to get an appointment from passport online
website http://www.passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink. Create a login there and then download passport application. After filling the application you can upload it or you can online fill application. Once application is filled offline or online, you can get a Application Reference Number (ARN). Then you need to take an passport appointment for kanpur which is a very difficult task in itself. When passport appointment link is open (it is closed sometimes), you can try to take an appointment after 4pm everyday. The trick is that only first 700 users get an appointment and time frame is only 0-2 minutes. You have to take the appointment between 4.00 pm and 4.02 pm. First you need to match your computer clock to be accurate. Then start trying after 3.50 pm and hopefully you get an passport appointment.
PSK Kanpur Experience

If you got an appointment you have a appointment number. Then you will take a print out of receipt and go to PSK with all relevant documents. They were asking for one year address proof in most cases so don't forget it.

In PSK, firstly you have to enter into office on your appointment time. Then all your documents were checked and a token number is allotted after waiting in the queue. If you have less documents then you will be sent back from here and you have to take next appointment. You have to pass three types of counters A, B and C before getting the acknowledgement of your application. Fee is submitted and documents were scanned at counter A. Documents checking at all counters. It will take around 2 to 3 hours for the whole process to complete. Passports were delivered after 10-15 days after this process. So, only taking appointment is a pain area. Also you can walk in without appointment but it is applied only in some cases and the walk in time is 9 to 11 am.

Passport appointment and Experience at Lalbagh

Recently I had the need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra in Bangalore lalbagh, Karnataka, India.  I had read a lot about the new & improved services initiated by the Ministry of External Affairs.  And I must say I was very impressed with the results.

The only painful experience is getting the passport appointment to visit the lalbagh Psk.  Sadly the appointments are exhausted within 5 minutes of the window opening.  However the appointment booking window opens all 7 days at 6 p.m.  Yes, the booking window opens all day of the week and the booking is for the subsequent working days.

Application Process
Once you fill the application and get the appointment, you need to carry the required documents and the fees to the lalbagh PSK.  The site (http://passportindia.gov.in) has very helpful tools to determine the fees for your application as well as the documents that needs to be carried with you.
Passport appointment and Experience at Lalbagh

Documents & Attestation
A few information that is not very clear with regards to the documents are;
When you take proof of residence you have to carry documents proving that you were a residence for at least a year.  What I mean by this is, if you are carrying telephone bills or utility bills, you need to carry a latest bill and a bill from last year.
Another thing is about document attestation.  In some situations you need to submit declarations that needs to be printed on lowest denomination stamp paper and notorised (e.g. when renewing a passport due to damage to the passport).  Samples of all these are provided in Appendix.
And the last point is some documents like you passport copy is mentioned to be self attested.  However for other documents, it is mentioned that it needs to be attested.  It is not mentioned whether 'attested' means self-attested or attested by a gazette officer.  You don't need to attest these document copies by a government officer.  You can self-attest these documents as well.  However don't forget to carry the original of these documents for verification by the officers there.

Total Time & Experience
All in all I was given a 30 minute slot and was asked to report 15 minutes earlier.  I reported on time.  There was a small crowd at the entrance.  People who had reached well before their due time.  However the security folks made it easy to enter inside on my scheduled reporting time.  The whole process is conducted very smoothly.  Instead of the planned 30 minutes, the entire process was completed in 45 minutes.  Very professional managed.

Kudos to change.  Hopefully we would have more & more of our government offices turn like this in future.
